About Basin Almanac

Basin Almanac is built around one simple idea: Los Angeles content should be useful past the week it was published, which means staying away from breaking news entirely and focusing on guides that hold up over time.

What this site is

A collection of practical, evergreen guides organized around the questions people actually have about living in or visiting Los Angeles: which neighborhood fits a particular lifestyle, how small business basics work locally, what the entertainment industry actually looks like from the outside.

Content gets organized by category, Local Interest, Business, Lifestyle, Entertainment, Sports, rather than by publish date, since the goal is a reference someone can come back to rather than a feed to scroll through once.

What this site deliberately does not cover

Breaking news, crime reporting, and political coverage are all intentionally left out. There is no attempt here to compete with real news outlets covering fast moving events, and readers looking for that kind of coverage should look elsewhere.

Specific claims about real people or companies are avoided unless independently verifiable, since a guide meant to stay accurate for years cannot responsibly repeat unverified claims the way a daily news cycle sometimes does.

How guides get written

Each guide starts from a genuine, recurring question, something a new resident or a longtime Angeleno might actually ask, rather than chasing a trending topic for traffic.

Guides get revisited periodically rather than published once and forgotten, since a neighborhood or an industry can change enough over a few years that an outdated guide does more harm than no guide at all.

Why the categories are limited

Categories here stay deliberately narrower than a typical news site: Local Interest, Business, Lifestyle, Entertainment and Sports, with nothing under Politics, World or U.S. News.

That narrower scope is a direct consequence of the evergreen approach. A guide about how the entertainment industry is generally structured can stay accurate for years, while a political or world news item is almost immediately outdated the moment it is published, which does not fit this site's purpose.

That tradeoff is deliberate rather than a limitation to apologize for. A narrower, more durable scope produces a more reliable reference than trying to be everything to everyone.
